Can I Avoid Getting Sick Over the Holidays?
It’s finally the holiday season once more, and we aren’t complaining! We love all of the community events in the Ooltewah area, the increased time spent with family and friends and celebrating the holidays that are near and dear to our hearts.
Naturally, we all want to avoid getting sick at this time of year so as to not miss out on all the fun. However, illnesses are always lurking around during the fall and winter season that could make you really sick.
Our AFC Urgent Care Ooltewah team wants you to stay as healthy as possible this season, so read on as we explain a few different ways to avoid illness.
What Are Some Ways to Avoid Infection?
While it certainly is impossible to 100% guarantee that you won’t get sick during the season, taking good care of yourself remains one of the most reliable ways to stay healthy. Getting rundown, experiencing high levels of stress or not getting the sleep you need can take a toll on your immune system and cause you to become sick.
Prioritizing washing your hands often with warm, soapy water and avoid touching your face as much as possible. Consider limiting the amount of time spent in large groups, and always keep your distance from sick individuals. Eat a healthy diet, stay hydrated and try to get between seven and nine hours of sleep every night. These simple tasks can do wonders for your overall health and can help you fend off illness more efficiently.
Additional Health Tips for the Holidays
- Bundle up when it is cold outside.
- Get your flu vaccine.
- Limit alcohol consumption.
- Wear your seatbelt while traveling.
What About Foodborne Illnesses?
Another common way people get sick at this time of year is due to an unsuspecting foodborne illness. Bacteria can start to grow on any food that is set out for too long, and there is certainly an uptick in family-style meals and spreads at this time of year.
Always prepare meat to its recommended temperature, and serve your food as soon as it is done. Store leftovers right away and clear the table of any perishable food quickly. A good rule of thumb is to toss any food that has been sitting out for two hours or more. If bacteria has started to grow, it could cause your entire party to get sick in a short amount of time.
Kitchen Safety
- Use designated cutting boards for raw meat and produce.
- Wash hands before handling food.
- Don’t cook for others when you aren’t feeling well.
- Understand specific allergies or dietary restrictions for those attending your party.
