How Can I Help My Kids Successfully Return to School?

There’s absolutely no doubt about it. School is very different this year, at least to start with.

But whether your child is learning in a classroom or taking virtual classes at home, you can play a role in helping him or her succeed. Read on as our team at AFC Urgent Care Ooltewah shares some tips.

What Will School Look Like This Year?

Now, that’s a question we can’t answer! School looks very different than a “normal” year, and it will look different for each student and family.

But one thing hasn’t changed—parents play an important role in helping their children reach their fullest potential. Growth and development at school are highly dependent on habits built at home, including healthy lifestyle habits.

Healthy Habits for Kids

  • Have them go to bed at the same time each night and wake up at the same time each morning.
  • Make sure they’re getting the amount of sleep recommended for their age.
  • Keep them physically active, aiming for 60 minutes of activity a day.
  • Fuel their bodies with healthy foods, including fruits and vegetables and lean protein.

How Can I Help My Kids Adapt to the Changes?

You probably know by now that kids will mimic the actions and reactions of adults. That’s definitely true when it comes to COVID-19 and changes related to the virus.

Your first step is to parse through new protocols and procedures. Do this away from your children, and keep your reactions to yourself. You want to share a positive mindset when you share the information with your kids.

How to Help Kids Prepare

  • If masks are required, help your kids choose face coverings they like.
  • Talk through the basics of how to wear a mask correctly over the nose and mouth.
  • Reiterate the importance of proper handwashing and when it should be done.
  • Talk through basic hygiene, including how to cover a cough or sneeze.
  • Help your kids visualize what six feet of space is.
